What’s on the desk this fall

Five books in the works, from a treasure hunt to a thriller — and one that’s much more personal.

A Treasure Map to Heaven Started more than a year ago, it is closest to done. Not a book about dying — a book about noticing: seven treasures, thirteen ways of noticing them, and an X to mark the moment your ordinary day answers a clue.

The Completed is a thriller. Elliot Marsh writes obituaries in Rochester, and he has begun to see something in the living that he shouldn’t be able to see. It was drafted this spring; now it’s been taken apart and started again from the first page, because a thriller has to make you afraid before it can mean anything. It’s better for it.

GLIMPSE, the novel the Glimpse Tool grew out of, is still coming.

A Woman and a Man Walk Into a Bar is the newest. Kate and Ben, married twenty-eight years, sit down in the same bar on the same evening — and you read it twice, once through her eyes and once through his. It’s about learning to borrow each other’s eyes. Further out, but on the desk.

And then something much more personal. Talking to the Wind is a memoir — thirty years as a father to my son, and what those years taught me to see. It will take exactly as long as it needs to.
